THE CAGE
Nathan Hansell  |  Exploration of Senses  |  Walkers and Wanderers
Located right next to the historical locomotives engine shop and South Eveleigh water tower, the CAGE enhances the history of the locomotive area through its play of threshold and manipulating the senses. This communal space elevated above the ground encourages the general public to move in and out of tight and open thresholds. The CAGE'S aim is to provide an experience where modernism and history clash through the location, architecture and the senses.

Deep Wall Analysis - Crichton Castle
Lucarelli, F. (2012). Walls as Rooms: British Castles and Louis Kahn. Floor plan of Crichton Castle with analysis
Straight Path
Curvature
Location - Scotland
Date of Construction - Late 14th Century
Architect - John de Crichton
Observations
Each window either minimises or maximises the light that enters the room. To maximise the amount of light each window is designed in a cone shape. The thickness of the castles walls is different for each room, outer walls are thicker than the inside walls which lead to tight and narrow spaces that open up into large and exciting spaces.  There is a large usage of void spaces making the individual walking through the space feel very minimal and alone.

9 Square Matrix - Iterative Field
The floor plan below highlights where each of my chosen fragments were picked from.
I used a combination of windows, thick walls and circular rooms to make my chosen 3. Each of the three fragments are a build up of multiple pieces.

Criteria
 - Each fragment must have a particular purpose and function
- Each room must have a source of natural/external light
- Must have a moment
- Must have a threshold
Rule set and Meisenheimer's Choreography

Models

Sacred Stores - Bruder Klaus Field Chapel
Sacred Stories by Bruder Klaus Field is a unique piece of architecture that strays away from typical chapel designs. Its monolithic rectangular outside is very smooth and clean cut surface. However, once entering through a large triangular door you are instantly forced to bend and walk through a tight corridor where you are introduced to high walls with a ceiling light to allow natural light to beam downwards. The interior is very different from what the outside perceives it as, instead of being a rectangular room you are encapsulated by the roughness of the walls and the feeling of being small and powerless. The hole in the ceiling makes it seem as if you're looking up to the heavens and the heavens looking back down.
Design Alterations
Draft 1                                                                                                                                 Draft 2
Continuing to play with lighting and the splitting of light through the thickness and thinness of walls. Having multiple level changes and platforms. Carving out fat walls to create a habitable space for 3,5 and 8 people.

Site Analysis - Redfern South Eveleigh
Macro Analysis
Areas                                                                                                                                 Historical Buildings
Movement                                                                                                                                 Topography

Meso + Micro Analysis
Site Section                                                                                                                                 Site Location
Vegetation                                                                                                                                 Lighting

The Generative Path
The Generative Path                                                                                                                                                                                    Neighbours and Movement
People                                                                                                                                               Time of Day
The Generative path allows for the fast and smooth movement of an individual moving through everyone's site, it allows for people to see the next site creating a sense of curiosity and excitement.

Neighbours allow for the quick movement between the sites. The cluster allows for individuals to experience a wider variety of designs, experience new thresholds and interact within voids and spaces. It also allows us to showcase the who is moving in and out of the site

Growing up - New Office Works
The Pavilion can be used for multiples functions such as
- An ideal spot to watch the sunset
- Sheltered space, variety of activities

The overall form and proportion is monolithic, it towers over people who walk inside and around.
When entering inside the light is split by the columns creating spaces of light and shadow.
The pavilion acts as a hub for gathering and an attraction for tourists
The materials were inspired by the environment around the pavilion.
It takes a different approach to architecture of the developing city in the background as many materials used in the urban cities are concrete and metal.
This gives a sense of life and freshness to the rapid cities growing skyline.

Mood Board
Wanting to create a design that is surrounded by greenery and in direct sunlight.
Playing with different thickness of materials allows for different effects

Floor Plan And Elevations                                                                                                                                                                          Walkers and Wanderers
Floor plan and elevations provide some visual context of my intention of my design
Walkers and wanderers demonstrates how two different types of people would interact on site

Class Theme
Theme
Creating awareness through unsustainable materials by using architectural elements to relate to a certain global issue
Condition
Using unsustainable materials such as concrete, plastic and metal
Territories
Having 3 different territories each addressing a different global issue
1. Air Pollution
2.Noise Pollution
3.Light Pollution
Site is sectioned off into 3 groups each focusing on their own unique area of study

Meso Analysis shows why our location best suits the issue of air pollution
Response
- Created enclosed spaces leading to open spaces
- Movement of the body
- Filtering of light and air

Rendered Model - The Cage
The exploration of the sense and the splitting of light through cuts, fat walls and moments.
Elevated above the ground and connecting to the adjacent Locomotive engine shop, The Cage enhances history through the architecture by exploring and enhancing of the senses.
Your sight changes as you walk between the different rooms, each one being unique as the last
Your hearing either becomes enhanced or reduced as you enter different rooms and cut outs
The warmth of the sun or the coldness of tight spaces affects your touch
The smell of the iron works factory sets the scene of its time in history
The taste of natures freshness as you become immersed within trees and vegetation

Human Interactions
Areas for resting and gatherings
Light is either minimised or maximised depending on the space you're in
Has quiet and excited spaces for groups of 3, 5 and 8

Future Ruins
Mother Nature Strikes Back!
50 years from now an unknown event will cause an increase rise in sea levels causing major flooding in the South Eveleigh Area. This flooding also caused a rapid growth in vegetation in the area causing animals to reclaim their land

My design becomes an animal playground where all different species come together to either rest, play or take shelter
